Related Projects

A number of related projects (both finished and running) have already been identified by VICINITY consortium partners, that will be closely linked and followed during the course of the project. An indicative list is presented below, to be constantly updated.

ebbits

The ebbits project - Business-Based Internet of Things and Services, does research in architecture, technologies and processes, which allow businesses to semantically integrate the Internet of Things into mainstream enterprise systems and support interoperable end-to-end business applications. The ebbits platform provides an IoT system infrastructure that supports the device/service management, advanced semantic processing of generated events, service orchestration, business systems interface services, and (cloud based) APIs for development and run-time. IS has been involved in ebbits as a co-designer and software developer of most of these features. Thanks to the gained experience, IS will reuse and exploit the ebbits outcomes in VICINITY for the construction of semantic structures and discovery mechanisms for both server and client side. Namely, ebbits resource ontologies, already built as compliant with the IoT- A reference architecture, will be reused and extended towards the oneM2M standard.

The semantic discovery in VICINITY will be based on the semantic resolution and events handling used in ebbits; however, the vertical integration of IoT devices will be enhanced in VICINITY to enable the horizontal interoperability of networked IoT devices. In addition, the IoT system LinkSmart, provided as an open source outcome of ebbits, will be employed in VICINITY as one of guest IoT infrastructures.

HYDRA

The HYDRA project - Networked Embedded System middleware for heterogeneous physical devices in a distributed architecture, has pioneered the P2P architecture for device networks which brings interoperability, flexibility, and security for IoT applications. Some of current IS employees participated in HYDRA, namely on the design and development tasks resulting in a provision of the Hydra/LinkSmart IoT middleware, which was further enhanced in consequent projects such as ELLIOT, ebbits, and several others.

VICINITY will reuse this solution as one of guest IoT infrastructures.

ELLIOT

The ELLIOT project - Experiential Living Lab for the Internet of Things, has developed an Internet of Things (IOT) experiential platform where users/citizens are directly involved in co-creating, exploring and experimenting new ideas, concepts and technological artefacts related to IOT applications and services. ELLIOT allowed studying the potential impact of IOT and the Future Internet in the context of the Open User Centred Innovation paradigm and of the Living Lab approach.

The expertise on co-creative design of user-centred IoT applications, gained by IS involved as a user partner in ELLIOT, will be employed in the design and development of the VICINITY client infrastructures. Moreover, semantic discovery mechanisms and related ontologies used in the Hydra/LinkSmart middleware, which was employed in ELLIOT as a core IoT enabler, will be reused for semantic discovery and dynamic reconfiguration of VICINITY registered IoT objects.

INERTIA

The INERTIA project - Integrating Active, Flexible and Responsive Tertiary Prosumers into a Smart Distribution Grid, has introduced the Internet of Things/Services principles to the Distribution Grid Control and DSM Operations. It has provided an overlay network for coordination and active grid control, running on top of the existing grid and consisting of distributed and autonomous intelligent Commercial Prosumer Hubs. This way, it has addressed the present “structural inertia” of DG by introducing more active elements combined with the necessary control and distributed coordination mechanisms. A multi-sensorial network has been installed allowing real-time monitoring and control of a variety of building’s assets (HVAC, Light, office & home appliances) within a spatio-temporal context, as deployed at ITI’s building in Thessaloniki, Greece, utilizing LinkSmart Middleware platform and custom ontologies created to address project’s needs.

Within INERTIA experience gained will assist in the definition of the VICINITY platform requirements along with the realisation with relevant Intelligent Building use-case, contributing to the definition of potential value add services based on experience gained.

REDIRNET

The REDIRNET project - Emergency Responder Data Interoperability Network, has provided a decentralized framework for interoperability for first responders’ systems based on a public meta-data gateway controlled by the agencies themselves via a REDIRNET socio-professional web. Agencies could link up to partner agencies of their choice and operational need; they could also manage the scope of such interoperability. To help set up these link-up arrangements REDIRNET has been enhanced with semantic web methods in accordance with the vocabulary and processes of the user community. Inter-operating agencies needed only to develop one gateway (to REDIRNET) leading to a cost effective solution; agent technologies have also been developed to facilitate the integration of user systems into REDIRNET.

REDIRNET project is one of the hot candidates for integration to VICINITY ecosystem to involve security domain in synergy with domains, subjects of VICINITY.

FREESIC

The FREESIC project – Free Secure Interoperable Communications, has created a solution that allows highly secure and cost effective interoperability between communication infrastructures over the entire Europe. The project has been inspired by legal, organizational and operational barriers the consortium has encountered during its previous activities.

The experience and lessons learned gained in FREESIC project will be reflected at the implementation of VICINITY platform.

NoTremor

The NoTremor project - Virtual, Physiological and Computational Neuromuscular Models for the Predictive Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease, aims to provide patient specific computational models of the coupled brain and neuromuscular systems that has been subsequently used to improve the quality of analysis, prediction and progression of Parkinson’s disease. In particular, it aspires to establish the neglected link between brain modelling and neuromuscular systems that result in a holistic representation of the physiology for PD patients.

The developed visualisation techniques will be further extended and refined within the scope of related use case, challenging VICINITY platform’s capabilities.
